Market Day!

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and
the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.
S for Science
T for Technology
E for Engineering
A for the Arts
and M for Maths
Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and
straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.
Then; make a table that was able to balance M&Ms for the team. We were much better
at the second challenge because
The table was better because it was stronger and it could hold all the M&Ms without
fouling and it looked better.

In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write
a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.
How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim
was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

My team made this we made sunflowers in a tiny pot

Reflection

My highlight from this PBL was making the sunflowers
outside from scratch and getting to see then grow up into little twigs.
At first we were going to make cubby holes to put books and pencils in it and other
things but then we thought it would be too hard to make a cubby hole and we would only
be able to make 4 to 6 so we did not. That is way we decide to make pot plants and the plant
is sunflowers. It was so fun making them and then selling them.

Next time I would maybe change the plant we were selling. I don’t want to change doing
the pot plants because it is so much fun seeing them grow up into big sunflowers.

what would you do for for market day?

Our Cool Performance

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about cultural stories and the big question was;
What is the significance in the 21st Century of our Cultural stories?

First we brainstormed what culture is and came up with lots of ideas. Culture is…… where we are from, Traditions - food - clothes - dancers, Celebrations.
Then we thought about our own culture and talked to our parents about our traditions and heritage. I wrote a post about my family and things we like to do.
In Literacy we read and discussed myths and legends from around the world then we concentrated on Maori legends. I read…. Maui and the sun.  I have written my own legend called…….. How the zebra got its stripes  in my own words.

We made a performance about the story Battle of the Mountains. Some students wrote the script, some students took on the job of making all the artwork, some worked hard on organizing the music and others took on the role of bringing the story alive with dance and drama.

Reflection: Being a kid and an actor
For our production I contributed by… being a kid in the performance.

I think the show might impact on others by… so people can remember the story the battle of the mountains

What I learned about working with others was that  am better at working with other people

Do you know any myths and legends?
